I have listened to the few respectable recordings there are out there of Gottschalk's piano music - Martin, Pennario, Licad, List - all have their pluses, but they pale in comparison with this one. Brilliant high-end, thundering sonority in the bass where it is needed, and clarity of astonishing proportions. This is not just an indispensable issue for gottschalk enthusiasts, but a mandatory purchase for any lover of piano music.The syncopated rythmns of "Souvenir de Porto Pico", the title (and finest piece), depicting an approaching carnival passing, then receding into the distance ( reminiscent of Stokowski's version of "Bydlo" from "Pictures from an Exhibition" or Rachmaninov's treatment of the Chopin funeral march) seems to act as a bridge between "Classical" and Ragtime.
