Picked it up because I didn't want a low powered model, or to mess with batteries for something I use very infrequently, and many of the ones intended for the task specifically seem designed around smaller dogs. Plus I wanted a decent Dremmel tool for myself :-) It is variable speed and using the lowest speed it is not terribly loud and does not annoy our 7 month German Shepherd unduly.
