Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Were World Wars I and IIâwhich can now be seen as a thirty-year paroxysm of slaughter and destructionâinevitable? Were they necessary wars? Were the bloodiest and most devastating conflicts ever suffered by mankind fated by forces beyond menâs control? Or were they products of calamitous failures of judgment? This week's tips:
Aspect Ratio - the ratio of image width to image height. The term may apply to the display device configuration, or the shape of the content being displayed. (See Letterboxing) HDTV uses an aspect ratio of 16 units wide by 9 units high. Conventional television programming and displays are at an aspect ratio of 4 - 3. Digital SDTV programs may aspect ratios from 4 - 3 to 16 - 9, dependant on content and its source (e.g. upconverted NTSC is likely to be 4 - 3).
Backing - Frame lumber installed between the wall studs to give additional support for drywall or an interior trim related item, such as handrail brackets, cabinets, and towel bars. In this way, items are screwed and mounted into solid wood rather than weak drywall that may allow the item to break loose from the wall. Carpet backing holds the pile fabric in place.
Bullhead - An extra large coffee bean. Sometimes a peaberry which has not totally grown together.
CPM (Cost Per Thousand) - Standard metric used to calculate the relative cost of advertising. It stands for the "cost per 1000 impressions". For every 1000 times an ad is shown, you are paid a certain amount of money.
Genmaicha - Green tea blended with roasted rice
HD-Ready TV - An HDTV monitor or TV that lacks a digital tuner.
Isometrics - a system of exercise in which opposing muscles are contracted. There is little movement even though both muscle sets are exerting force
Local Area Network (LAN) - A group of computers in an office or building connected to one another by cable. A network computer can access files on other computers in the network or enable others to open and use its files. Printers, modems, and CD-ROM drives are also typically shared peripherals on a network.
Rated Capacity - The number of ampere-hours a battery can deliver under specific conditions (e.g., rate of discharge, end voltage, temperature); usually specified by the battery manufacturer.
